우리시대의 자화상_ 박진화 작품전

사람이 사람속을 바라볼 수 있다면 어떤 모습이 될까 궁금해 집니다. 자신의 마음을 들여다보고 어떤 모양인지 어떻게 오늘을 사는지 이해할 수 있다면 어떤 일이 일어날까요. 어떤 이는 마음의 모양을 뒷동산에 두기도 하고, 어느 예술가는 아무도 닿지 않은 미지의 동토로 두기도 합니다.

그녀가 바라보는 내면은 우리가 사는 세상과 닮아있습니다. 그래서 작품을 감상하는 입장에서는 우리시대의 자화상인 것 같습니다. 그녀의 이야기는 곧 나의 이야기이면서 우리시대의 오늘입니다. 작품 <내 안의 문>이 있습니다. 무엇이가로 가득차 있을 줄 알았던 속을 들여다보니 아무것도 없습니다. 아름다운 자연경관이나 살아가는 사람들의 모습은 창으로 보여지는 환영이거나 그림자였습니다. 세상이 자신을 바라보는 것은 아름답고 우아한 모습일지 모르지만 내가 내 스스로를 바라보았을 때는 여전히 부족하고 더 많은 것을 채워나가야만 할 비워진 공간일 뿐이었습니다. 그래서 우리는 무엇인가를 채우고자 하는 욕망이 있나 봅니다.

화가 박진화를 무엇을 그린다기 보다는 예술가의 세상을 찾아내는 것 같습니다. 어릴 적 소풍 놀이에서 선생님이 숨겨놓은 보물찾기 하듯이 내면이라고 하는 세상을 이곳 저곳 누비고 다닙니다. 사람들에게서, 사람들과 만나고 있는 마음에서, 오늘을 사는 화가의 눈길에서 무언가를 찾아냅니다. 그래서 그녀의 전시주제가 ‘사유하는 내면의 초상’인가 봅니다.

작품 시리즈가 있습니다. 그녀의 이야기입니다. 누군가를 바라보듯 타인의 눈으로 자기를 탐색합니다. 기뻐하고, 즐거워하고, 오늘을 살고, 답답해 하기도 하는 현대를 사는 모습을 대변합니다. 때로는 참회도 하지만 외면하기도 합니다.

자기를 찾는 일이란 살아있다는 사실을 알게하는 것이며, 이를 그림으로 그리는 것은 화가 스스로의 도취가 아니라 예술가적 삶의 전부이기 때문입니다. 결론이 내어지는 희극이거나 권선징악이나 비극이 아닙니다. 창작을 해 나가는 예술의 보편성을 드러내는 자유의 의지이면 삶의 의지를 상징적으로 드러내는 자유의 공간입니다. 이것은 작품 <존재의 단면>등의 작품으로 나타납니다.

박진화의 작품을 감상하면서 즐거운 생각을 떠올립니다. 무한한 영역의 시간과 새로운 세계를 살아가는 공간의 가시성을 설정하고 거기에 본인의 모습을 그려냅니다. 여기에서는, 이 영역에서는 그녀 자신이 모든 것을 관장하는 유일자이면서 무엇이든 편집 가능 한 설계자입니다. 우리는 그것을 즐기면서 창조하거나 해체하거나 긍정하거나 부정하면 되는 일입니다. 오늘을 사는 감상자의 자화상이 되고 맙니다.

Self-Portrait of Our Time _ Park Jinwha Exhibition

I often wonder what it would look like if one person could truly see inside another. What would happen if we could look into our own hearts, understand their shape, and recognize how we are living today? Some people place the shape of their hearts on a quiet hillside, while certain artists set theirs in an unknown, untouched land of frost.

The inner world that Park Jinwha gazes into resembles the world we live in. This is why, for the viewer, her work feels like a self-portrait of our time. Her story becomes my story—our story—reflecting the present we share. In the work The Door Within, the inside, which we assumed would be filled with many things, turns out to be empty. The beautiful scenery and the figures of people appear only as illusions or shadows framed by a window. The world may view us as graceful or elegant, yet when we look at ourselves, we often find a hollow space that must be filled. Perhaps this is why we humans possess an unending desire to fill ourselves with something.

Park Jinwha does not simply paint something; she seems instead to discover the world of an artist. Like a childhood treasure hunt on a school picnic, she wanders through the landscape of the inner world, searching here and there. She finds traces in people, in the emotions that arise from being with them, and in the gaze of an artist living today. This is why her exhibition carries the theme “A Portrait of the Contemplative Inner Self.”

Her Her Story series presents her own narrative. As though looking at herself through another’s eyes, she explores her identity—rejoicing, delighting, living the day, or feeling frustration, mirroring the lives of people today. At times she repents; at times she turns away.

To search for oneself is to realize that one is alive. To express this through painting is not self-indulgence but the essence of an artist’s life. It does not seek a conclusion—neither comedy, moral triumph, nor tragedy. It is the freedom of creation that reveals the universality of art, a symbolic space where the will to live becomes visible. This is expressed in works such as Cross-section of Being.

Viewing Park Jinwha’s work evokes a joyful thought. She sets visibility within a boundless realm of time and a space where a new world can be lived, then paints herself within it. In this sphere, she becomes both the sole overseer and the designer who can edit anything freely. We, as viewers, are invited to enjoy this—creating, dismantling, affirming, or denying as we wish. Inevitably, it becomes a self-portrait of the viewer living today.
